Panorama Tools
Panorama Tools is a collection of scripts and tools to remap images which have multiple uses and it is the basis upon which great part of the existing panorama editing and publishing programs is based on.
This tools created by Helmut Dersch are the mathematical foundation to which multiple applications, both free and commercial, add a graphic and intuitive front end that makes them accessible to a non-expert public. However, the Panorama Tools are many and diverse and they can be used without the need of the above mentioned adaptations.
The following pair of images taken from the original professor Dersch's website illustrates just a few of the transformations that can be achieved using Panorama Tools.

The continuity of the Panorama Tools project has been hampered since 2001 by the lawsuit filed against Helmut Dersch by the Ipix Company regarding the use of remapped images for creating immersive environments on which Ipix has intellectual property rights registered in the United States. However, the use of Panorama Tools is widely spread and is the basis of, among other programs,
AutoPano,
Calico Panorama,
Hugin,
PanoCube,
PanoWizard,
PTAssembler,
PT-Gui,
PTLens,
PTMac and
PTOpenGUI.
All these programs, with tones, apply the remapping Panorama Tools to the creation of panoramas from sets of photos, manipulating their shapes to optimize the seams and thus obtain a consistent final result. Among the most popular Panorama Tools include :
MPRemap is a tool which applies Panorama Tools to moving images to create remapped panoramic videos.

The Panorama Tools website is an invaluable source of information for all those interested in going further than just the simple panoramic photograph creation to explore in depth the images's projection and mapping options and their linking to scripts that turn them into interactive environments.
