Pixtra Stitchers

PanoStitcher and OmniStitcher are two Pixtra programs to stitch cylindrical and spherical or arbitrarily shaped partial panoramas respectively.

Pixtra distinguishes itself from other panorama stitching software creators by presenting their products as separate applications : the linear PanoStitcher panorama stitcher and the OmniStitcher spherical and arbitrarily shaped partial panorama stitcher. Apart from targeting different types of panoramas, both applications have similar designs and tools.

The PanoStitcher interface features two main areas: the work area, where all the source images with which the panorama is elaborated are shown simultaneously, and the preview area, where the whole panorama is displayed as it is being created. PanoStitcher recognizes focal length of the images based on information provided by the camera and analyzes them for control points to automatically align them. The program performs automatic corrections of distortions caused by lens failures and also corrects chromatic aberrations and balances the differences in exposure between shots. A very important feature is that it creates panoramas from pictures taken at very different zoom levels, which is very usel for panoramas captured on freehand sequences.

PanoStitcher also allows for the manual correction of eventual failures at the automatic processes. Among the highlights of the advanced manual tools is the leveling function of the horizon line and the creation of pairs of control points, allowing the simultaneous visualization of the coincident areas of two images with correctly placed control points marked in one color and those misaligned shown in another one, while at the assembly window matching images can be moved smoothly, providing an agile and intuitive way for correct positioning of the transition areas. It also allows the manual cropping of photos and the handling of brightness, contrast and colors in each image.

The OmniStitcher interface, on the other hand, has three main areas: the work and preview areas, similar to those of PanoStitcher, plus an interactive panorama preview area, where the image can be seen both in rectilinear or curved projection, similar to the projection on a sphere, called world-map. OmniStitcher serves both to create complete spheres from rows of partially overlapping photographs and for partial panoramas of arbitrary shapes created from overlapping groups of photographs without a regular pattern of exposure, supporting both normal and fisheye lens shots.

OmniStitcher also features all the automatic and manual PanoStitcher tools, which are executed from floating menus and with auxiliary lines and marks in the editing window, plus others suitable for spherical panoramas such as the filling of the zenith and nadir areas.

Both programs are able to present the created panoramas as flat images in common formats, and in web pages with configurable interactive virtual tours based on the PixtraViewer and PanoViewer plug-ins for Java, Flash or QuickTime and also as dynamic screensavers.
