On this page we'll see how to shoot a 360 degree video with a parabolic mirror.
To capture 360 degree donut shaped videos we used a mounted over a Canon X-20is camera capturing video at its maximum definition of 720x640 pixels. To shoot we fitted the camera on a Manfrotto tripod with a movable head so that it was possible for us to oint the camera straight up holding the mirror above it the same way we would have done this to capture static 360 Degree Donut Shots with a parabolic mirror. Making use of the spirit level fixed to the parabolic mirror, before shooting each scene we have made sure that the gear alignment is perfectly vertical. in the world of 360 degree photography and video a perfect positioning is almost a guarantee of a good shot.
If you do not have a specific parabolic mirror for panoramic photography you can try replacing it with a Domestic Mirror.
We shot some scenes just over a minute long in separate locations. The camera stores the data in MOV format files. For this example we'll only use two movies, each one about two minutes long, consisting each one of a file, which we need to download to our computer. To get started we'll create a folder into the C disk unit which we will call video360 where we'll download the two source movies :
Pictured in the foreground is the parabolic mirror, which reflects the entire 360 degree panorama in the direction of the camera. Within the scene objects and people are naturally moving, as shown below :
You can download the uncompressed version of these video_original_01.mov (318 Mb) and video_original_02.mov (291 Mb) videos.
While the soource videos last about two minutes each, we intend to create a sequence of consecutive shots lasting thirty seconds each, so that the visitor will be tempted to continue watching the video looking for more details, after all scenes have passed and the video has returned to the starting point while the action continues.
