Spherical Panorama With Logo Creation With AutoPano-Pro
On this page we will see step by step how to create a Spherical Panorama from a set of aligned shots using this excellent commercial software.
We'll call Spherical Photographs Fom Aligned Shots those 360 x 180 degree panoramas photographed by a camera rotating about a vertical axis coincident with the nodal point of the lens, unlike those created from non-aligned shots, which are obtained by rotating the camera not around an axis but a precise point in space, the nodal point. In order to create spheres from such images, the camera needs to have an appropriate Fisheye Lens suitable for shooting 180 degree or more in a single exposure, so the accuracy in positioning must be extremely precise, impossible to achieve without the aid of a nodal rotator.
Autopano-Pro is an excellent commercial software whose strength is detecting images belonging to the same panorama between sets of photographs, find control points between the different images and combine them all into panoramic photographs in practically automated processes. In our example we will create a sphere from three Circular Fisheye photographs, separated from each other by a distance of 120 degree. Although Autopano-Pro is able to recognize these images as belonging to the same panorama, even mixed among many other photographs, our recommendation is to make such selection manually. The first step, then, is to place the three images in a separate folder, select them all and drag the selection to the Autopano-Pro's main window :
In this way we will have created a set of images that are immediately displayed in the left panel of the program's window :
The next step is to click on the Image Properties button , which opens a new program's window :
In the Properties window of the image we see the detail of the of the group's images. If we are working with images downloaded directly from a digital camera, it will show some features that the camera reports through the file such as the camera brand and model :
However, since we have obtained the photographs using a lens different from the original, we must inform this to the program, for which we need to select all images and display the Lens Type option's menu :
We will select the Fisheye option and we could immediately see that the lens type has changed at each photograph's detail :
By accepting it the window will close and back to the main window of Autopano-Pro we can see that also there the type of lens is now Fisheye. We are ready to start the detection of panoramas by clicking the Detect button :
While the panorama detection process goes, we can see a progress indicator which will disappear at the end of the process :
After the process of detection, Autopano-Pro has found a panorama and has automatically created a preview of it in the right pane of the main window. It also shows some features of the panorama, such as the type of projection and image dimensions : also, together with these data, we found an Edit button :
By clicking on the Edit button a new window opens with an enlarged view of the panorama and various editing tools. We click on the Vertical Lines button to use this tool :
With the help of the mouse we will draw on the image as many lines as possible matching lines which in the photographed space are vertical. They will help us to realign the entire image. The higher the number of lines drawn, the greater precision we will get with this tool. When we're done, we'll click on the green checkmark to apply the desired realignment :
As we can see below, the image has been straightened. The lines that we had marked vertical are now are really so and have been accommodated the rest of the image in their movement. Below we will click on the Yaw, Pitch and Roll button to recenter our panorama :
In the left pane we find three boxes where to enter numeric data. Since we do not propose rotate or twist our panorama but only to move it laterally, we will only enter a number on the Yaw box. If this is the first time you use this tool you may need a couple of attempts to guess the correct number. With a little practice you'll learn to estimate more precisely. We inted that the wood molding that stands out in the panorama will be located exactly at the ends of this, which will require a displacement of 209 degree. In the corresponding box we write 209 :
To run the transformation let's confirm the data by clicking the green tick :
Now the panorama has the look we want. We just need to create it, for which we will click on the Plot button :
A new window will open with some options for the panorama creation. The most important are the dimensions of the image to be created, the format of the output file, the quality, file name and location. We'll complete all the fields with our preferences and in our case, we'll also mark Overwrite Existing Files so if some file already exists with the chosen name in the same location, the new file will be created in its place. Finally, we will click on Plot :
It will open a new window for the panorama plotter, with a progress indicator to show us the various stages of file creation :
When the file creation has finished, the progress indicator will disappear remaining only in view the data of the created panorama :
We can now go find the file in the location that we had chosen in the plot window :
This is the panorama we have created. To see it as interactive Virtual Tour click on the image :
Remember that the Autopano-Pro watermarks indicate that it has been created with the trial version of the program. To eliminate them altogether, so as to avoid further restrictions on the use of Autopano-Pro a registration is required. The registration to this excellent program costs 99 euros.
