Interactive Javascript Panorama Publising

Unlike Virtual Tours based on Flash or Java, those based on Javascript do not require any plugins or any previous intallation on the device where they are accessed from. In theory, any computer with a browser should be ready to allow interaction with a Javascript animated panorama.

In exchange for this important advantage, Javascript is quite an unsuitable programming language to work with perspectives and immersive images. Most of the codes that allow to see interactive panoramas based on this language only support scrolling to the right or left, up or down, but do not execute the permanent remapping that creates an immersive effect on panoramas. Those that do create this do it by indirect means, by partitioning the image in a great number of smaller images which result in Virtual Tours which load and move very slowly.

The above said implies that it is always convenient to use Flash or Java to animate panoramas, but it is also worth creating an alternative for those who access our pages without having installed the mentioned environments to also be able to play our Virtual Tours.

Out of the many panorama viewers in Javascript that are found through the Internet we have choosen to implement a script by which we have picked because of its good performance and speed.

Javscript Panorama Viewer Presentation

To insert a Javascript based interactive panorama into a webpage all we need is two files : the panorama and the page. If your site uses a styles .css file you can include the class corresponding to the panorama viewer into the mentioned file, otherwise it will be enough to include it in the header of your page, as we'll do in this demonstration. For this example we'll save both files to a folder which we'll name Javascript :

To get started click on the image below to download it and save it to the Javascript folder with the name panorama.jpg :

As we have been doing, also to create this page we'll work simultaneously with two programs : a browser that shows us the page and a text editor that shows us its code :

Between the <head> and </head> tags insert the lines corresponding to the style's definition. These include the reference to the image file (url), the dimensions of the viewer's window (height and width), the image to be projected as the mouse's cursor over the panorama (cursor) and the horizontal positioning of the viewer (float). If you want to, you can edit these lines to customize the look of the Virtual Tour :

<style type="text/css">
#panoramajavascript {
background-image: url(panorama.jpg);
height: 300px;
width: 450px;
background-position: left top;
cursor: move;
float: center;}

Between the <body> and </body> tags there where you want the Virtual Tour to be shown insert the lines below. If you know what you are doing, you can edit the functions but if you are not sure it is recommended not to modify anything :

<div id="panoramajavascript"></div>
<script type="text/javascript">
panoramajavascriptDiv=document.getElementById('panoramajavascript'); dragStartX=0;
function dragStart(e) {
if (!e) var e = window.event;
if (timerId) {
function drag(e) {
if (!e) var e = window.event;
function dragStop() {
if (timerId) {
function scroll() {
(backgroundPosX)+"px "+Math.floor(backgroundPosY)+"px";

That's all. Just save the changes to the page and reload it to see the Virtual Tour at play :

Unlike interactive panoramas based on Java and Flash this Virtual Tour is visible in tablets such as iPads, although it only works partially. The image rotates automatically but it does not respond to the user's command and keeps rotating by itself.
